USA vs Netherlands
In a rematch of 2019’s World Cup final, the United States took on the Netherlands in Wellington. A first-half goal to the Dutch had it looking like a successful revenge mission for the Oranje until a clash between two club teammates fired the USWNT back into the game.
Danielle van de Donk and Lindsey Horan, club teammates at French club Lyon, came together in a tense second-half exchange which resulted in the midfielder equalising for the USA less than 60 seconds later. Post-match, Horan told ESPN that the incident spurred her on.
"I don't think you ever want to get me mad because I don't react in a good way. Usually, I just go and I want something more -- I want to win more, I want to score more, I want to do more for my team.
"So that moment changed a shift in my head because I want to do everything for my team and to win these games."
On the balance of the game, the stats will tell you that the USA deserved at least a point from this fixture. They were certainly the morse attacking, and perhaps just need to work on the profligacy in front of the goals.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH: Rose Lavelle (USA). Lavelle was a complete game-changer when she came on half-time. Everything looked better from the USWNT once she was on the pitch, and she picked up the assist for the equalising goal.

Portugal vs Vietnam
It was a battle of the World Cup debutantes, and Portugal comfortably took care of a Vietnamese side, keeping their slim chances of qualifying for the knockout phase alive. Twenty-one-year-old striker Telma Encarnação had an absolute day out, starring for the dominant Portuguese, scoring one goal and setting up another.
The result could have been much more one-sided if it wasn’t for the Vietnamese goalkeeper, Kim Thanh, who was sensational between the sticks yet again. It was in the attack that the Vietnamese were left wanting yet again, only managing one shot on target for the entire 90 minutes.
Portugal remains with a chance of qualifying for the knockout stage, but it will require a Herculean effort to do so, as they will need to defeat world champions the UNoited States in order to do so.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH: Telma Encarnação (NED). A goal and an assist in her country's ever World Cup win, not a bad day out for the 21-year-old. Honourable mention goes to Vietnam goalkeeper Kim Thanh, who has been remarkable in both of Vietnam’s matches and kept the scorelines to respectable totals.
In the other days fixture, Australia went down to Nigeria 3-2 to keep their World Cup hopes hanging in the balance. For a more in-depth look at that fixture, click here:
